Ceramics Student Work

Beginning ceramic assignments:

Pinch pot #1:  Create a sphere with 2 pinch pots then carve, apply decoration, or manipulate it in a way that it represents at least 3 of your personal traits.

Pinch pot #2:  Create a pinch large pinch pot. Start by pinching the foundation and grow it by pinching daubs of clay to the upper edge of your pot until it has grown at lest eight inches in height.
Coil project #1:        A coil sculptural form that Dr. Seuss would be proud of. 
Coil project #2:        A Fremont Indian inspiered coil pot.
Coil project #3:        A smoothed organic coil pot.
Slab project #1:       A soft slab pot.
Slab project #2:       Pouch Pot with Texture.
Slab project #3:       Simple slab bowl using a hump or slump mold.
Slab project #4:       Slab box using ridged slab construction.
Wheel thrown pot #1: Create on the pottery wheel a cylinder between 5-6 inches in height and shape it into a fat bellied pot. 
Wheel thrown pot #2: Create on the pottery wheel a cylinder between 5-6 inches in height and shape it into a genie bottle form.
Wheel thrown pot #3: Create on the pottery wheel 8 cylinders that will become mugs in one class period.
Wheel thrown pot #4: Create on the pottery wheel 3 Bowls. One designated a cereal bowl, one soup bowl, and one of your choice.
Final Ceramics Project: Create two pots or forms using the wheel or hand building techniques and combine them in some way to make one form or pot.

Intermediate ceramic assignment examples:

Intermediate Wheel thrown pot #1 Create on the pottery wheel a cylinder between 10-12 inches in height and shape it into a fat bellied pot. 

Intermediate Wheel thrown pot #2: Create on the pottery wheel a cylinder between 10-12 inches in height and shape it into a pitcher form.
Intermediate Wheel thrown pot #3: Create on the pottery wheel 15 cylinders that will become mugs in one class period.
Intermediate Wheel thrown pot #4: Create on the pottery wheel one nesting bowl set of 3 or 4 Bowls.
Intermediate Wheel thrown pot #5:  Create on the pottery wheel three cylinder pots with three different lids such as inset, dome, or overcast.
Intermediate Wheel thrown pot #6: Create on the pottery wheel 2 plates and 2 platter forms.

3-D Design Assignments: 
PROJECT #1
Develop and construct a way to present an item.  This should give the item a sense of higher importance, greater value, or distinguish its worth in a creative manner.

PROJECT #2 Gargoyle or Grotesque statue
Using the subtractive method of sculpture, create a gargoyle or grotesque statue out of a Styrofoam block.  This should use the element of shape or form to effectively create the creature’s mass, volume, and gesture with an asymmetrical balance. The entire piece will be one color, coated with cement or stucco, with the exception of the eyes, which may be glass.  The final project should not look square or block like. 

PROJECT #3 Metamorphic Unity and Rhythm
Using foam core or cardboard cut out a regular shape crating a plane. You also need to cut out an amorphous shape.

PROJECT #4 Altered Surface
Take 5 Ping-Pong balls and alter their surfaces in five different ways in order to create the greatest contrasts in perceived mass, weight, volume, softness, hardness, etc. Do not let any glue show.

PROJECT #5 Narrative Tile
Find a story that you like. In the story there should be a part in it that is significant to the plot of the story. You will create a relief sculpture using clay of that scene. You may also crate a montage of several scenes from the story.
